Mike Flanagan's Carrie Has Already Been Renewed for Season 2 at Prime Video

Prime Video has confirmed that Mike Flanagan's Carrie is coming back for a second season, and Erin barely had time to finish the first before the news landed.

Carrie is Stephen King's debut novel, first published in 1974, about a bullied teenage girl called Carrie White who discovers she has telekinetic powers, and whose prom night ends in disaster. Mike Flanagan has turned it into a new series for Prime Video, and Prime Video has now confirmed that it is coming back for a second season. I finished the whole first season this week, and before I'd even caught my breath, the renewal news landed. For a Stephen King devotee who has spent the last fortnight glued to this, that is about the best Wednesday I've had in a while.

Why a Renewal This Early Is Worth Noticing

According to Bloody Disgusting, who first reported the news, Prime Video has given Carrie a second season off the strength of the first. I'm not going to pretend I have access to Prime Video's viewing figures, because nobody hands those to me over coffee, but platforms don't commit to a second run of anything unless the first one is pulling its weight. A renewal this quickly, while the first season is still fresh in people's minds rather than months old and half forgotten, tells you something about how confident Prime Video is in what Flanagan has built here.

It also tells you something about trust. Flanagan has spent years turning King's books and horror's old favourites into television that horror fans actually show up for, rather than switch off halfway through. A second season confirmed this early is Prime Video betting on that same trust paying off again.

What I'm Not Going to Do Here

I'm not going to sit here and guess what a second season covers. The news itself is simple: Carrie has been renewed. That's it, that's the whole story today, and I think it deserves to be reported as exactly that rather than padded out with my own guesswork about where the story goes from here. If you want the renewal news in full, Bloody Disgusting has it: Mike Flanagan's Carrie Renewed for Season 2 at Prime Video. I'd rather send you there for the facts and keep my half of this to how it feels watching it land.

Why I'm Pleased, Not Just Relieved

I went into this series the way I go into most King adaptations: half excited, half braced to be let down. I finished it feeling like I'd actually watched something that understood why the book has lasted fifty years, and that's not a small thing to pull off with a story this well known. There is a particular kind of nervousness that comes with loving a book that everyone thinks they already know the ending to, and a good adaptation has to earn your attention anyway. This one did, for me, and clearly for enough other people that Prime Video didn't want to wait around to say so.

So here's where I actually land on this. A renewal before I've even properly let the first season settle is a good problem to have. It means the story isn't finished, it means there's more coming, and it means I get to spend another season with a character I only properly got to know this fortnight, between the book and the first season back to back.

Did you watch the first season as it went out, or are you one of the people still catching up? Either way, tell me what you made of it while we wait on any proper news about what season two actually holds. I'll be here, kettle on, refusing to speculate until Prime Video actually tells us something.
