The Taking is Dean Koontz's 2004 horror novel, and Bantam Books put it out. That is about as much as I'll tell you, because I'd rather you went in without me steering you. It is a book that leans on mystery as much as fear, so expect questions to keep piling up before anything gets answered.

If you want a number, I'd call it a three for scares. That's my own reading rather than a rule, and it sits in the middle: enough to make you glance at the dark corners of the room, not enough to send you hunting for the lamp. It is the sort of horror you read for the unease rather than for a jump.

It's for readers who like a horror novel with some mystery in it, and who want a book they can settle into properly. Pick a wet evening, put the big jumper on, make the coffee stronger than is sensible and keep the curtains drawn while you read.
