The Other Mommy Trailer Just Ruined My Evening

I watched the new Other Mommy trailer completely cold, no spoilers, no warning, and it has quietly wrecked the rest of my week. It is also, without question, going straight on the watch list.

The Other Mommy Trailer Just Ruined My Evening

I watched the new Other Mommy trailer last night, completely cold, no context, no warning from anyone in my life who apparently thought it wasn't worth mentioning, and it has ruined my evening in the specific way only good horror manages. Not the jump scare way. The way where you finish your tea and just sit there for a bit, staring at the wall, recalibrating.

For anyone who has somehow avoided it so far, the trailer went up this week and was flagged first by Bloody Disgusting, whose write up promises you will never look at Jessica Chastain the same way again. I read that headline, rolled my eyes slightly because headlines say that about everything, and then watched the actual trailer with the smugness of someone who has seen a lot of horror and does not scare easily. I would like to formally withdraw my smugness.

What the Other Mommy Trailer Actually Shows

I am not going to spoil this one, partly because the whole appeal is going in as blind as I did, and partly because I genuinely do not think a summary does it justice. What I will say, without giving anything away, is that it is less about a single big scare and more about a mood that sits wrong from the first shot. It builds the way a bad feeling builds when you are home alone and the house makes a noise it does not usually make.

It is doing something I always want more horror to do: trusting the audience to feel unsettled rather than telling them to. No cheap sting to signal "be scared now." Just a slow, patient wrongness that gets under your jumper and stays there.

Jessica Chastain, But Wrong

Here is the bit that got me. Chastain plays this with total commitment, and the trailer leans hard on her face doing things a face should not casually do in a two minute clip. It is not a costume trick or a makeup reveal, from what I can tell. It is closer to watching someone familiar tilt very slightly off true, and your brain keeps trying to correct it back to normal and failing.

I have seen her be warm, be furious, be quietly devastating in other films. This is the first time I have watched her and felt actively unsafe, which is, and I say this with total sincerity, a compliment of the highest order.

It Is Now Non-Negotiable

So here is where I have landed, as a genuine fan reacting in real time rather than someone paid to have opinions about it. This is on my list. Not the vague, aspirational "list" I keep telling myself I will get through on a rainy Sunday. The proper list, the one with actual dates next to things.

If you have not seen the trailer yet, go and watch it before anyone spoils the details for you, because that is genuinely half the experience. And if you have already seen it, come and tell me I am not the only one who is slightly off my food tonight.
