The Last Kiss Trailer Is Here, and It's Coming Fast

Right, so I was meant to be tidying my desk tonight and instead I fell down a trailer hole, which is a much better use of an evening if you ask me. The one that stopped me mid-scroll was for a film called The Last Kiss, a new horror slasher from Blumhouse. It's not out yet, but it's close: digital release is next week, which in film terms is basically tomorrow.

If the name Blumhouse doesn't mean much to you, it's the production company behind a huge chunk of the horror films you've probably already seen without clocking who made them. They've built a reputation for turning out sharp, well made horror on a schedule most studios wouldn't dare attempt, so when a new one from them lands in the trailer bin, I pay attention.

What the trailer's about

The Last Kiss is a romantic slasher, which is a phrase I quite like the sound of, because it suggests somebody's love story and somebody's murder are happening at the exact same time and nobody involved seems to realise how bad an idea that is. It stars McKenna Grace, who horror fans will know from a fair few genre films at this point, and the trailer leans into that mix of romance and dread rather than hiding one behind the other.

I'm not going to walk you through what happens shot by shot. Partly because that's a rubbish way to watch a trailer for the first time, and partly because half the fun of a slasher trailer is not knowing which bit of the couple's cosy evening is about to go horribly wrong. What I will say is that it does the thing a good horror trailer should do: it makes you want to see the whole film immediately, not just admire the editing.

On the watchlist

With digital arrival only days away, this one's going straight on my list for a night in with the lights low and the takeaway menu open. I'll be honest, a romantic slasher is exactly the sort of odd combination that gets me curious rather than put off. I don't know yet whether it'll be brilliant or just good fun, but either way, it's the kind of film I'd rather watch cold than spoil for myself scrolling around online.
