I did the sensible thing, which was to lie completely still with my eyes shut and negotiate with whatever it was until morning. In daylight it turned out to be an old radiator cooling down and the floor settling underneath it, which is a very reasonable explanation that has never once stopped me sleeping with the landing light on in that house.

That is the shape most of these stories take, if I am honest. Not a monster. A moment where your body decides something is wrong before your brain has caught up, and takes its time agreeing to be talked down.

The stories that actually stay with people

Reading through what people have been sharing, the ones that stick are rarely the dramatic ones. Nobody remembers the story with the most blood.
