Five Nights at Freddy's

Picture the worst job listing you've ever seen: overnight security guard at a pizzeria nobody has bothered to fix up since the animatronics stopped being cute. That's the job Josh Hutcherson takes on here, because sometimes rent doesn't care how creaky the floorboards are or how few exits there seem to be.

It doesn't take long before he works out those furry mascots aren't just old wiring and bad puppetry. Something is still in there, and it hasn't clocked off in years. The horror creeps rather than jumps, at least at first, which is somehow worse, and the pizzeria keeps its secrets close for a good while yet.

Emma Tammi directs it with a proper eye for a building that used to be full of children's laughter and now just echoes, which is its own kind of unsettling even before anything moves that shouldn't.

This is one for the people who like their scares to come with a mystery attached, the sort of night where you want the lights half on and a friend within shouting distance. Don't expect answers early. Do expect to look twice at anything wearing a costume for a while afterwards.
