This one brings Annabelle back into Ed and Lorraine Warren's orbit, and where that doll goes, trouble tends to follow. It's part of the wider Conjuring world, and if you know the earlier Annabelle films, this one slots in as the next chapter rather than a fresh start.
It has that haunted house feel where you're never quite sure which room is safe, more a slow build of things creeping about than one single villain doing all the work. The dread sits in the corners and the quiet stretches rather than in any one big reveal.
It's a jumpy, shadows in the corridor kind of scary rather than anything that will sit with you for days after, so it suits a night when you want your heart properly rattled without losing sleep over it. Good one for a group watch with the lights down and someone on standby to check the hallway.
If you've followed the Warrens through the earlier films, there's a nice sense of homecoming to it, cast included.
