The year is 1932, the place the Mississippi Delta, and twin brothers, both played by Michael B. Jordan, come home to the town they grew up in carrying more trouble than sense. The Jim Crow South is already a hard place to be, and that's before something far older and far worse starts paying attention.
Ryan Coogler doesn't rush to show his hand here. This is vampire horror that takes its time, letting the heat and the history and the old grudges settle in first, so that when the fear does arrive, it lands properly. Wunmi Mosaku and Delroy Lindo round out a town full of people who clearly know more than they're saying.
It's horror with genuine weight to it, not just jump scares, the kind that mixes real dread with something almost mournful. Good for a night when you want to be unsettled and moved in equal measure, not just startled.
Watch it with the lights low and something warm in your hands. It earns every one of its hours, and it isn't the sort of thing you'll shake off quickly.
