Castle Rock takes its name straight from Stephen King's fictional Maine, and that alone tells you what sort of welcome to expect. It is adapted from that town, where the woods keep secrets and the neighbours keep more.
It unfolds slowly over two seasons and twenty episodes, so it rewards patience rather than nerves of steel from the first minute. This is dread that settles in rather than one that startles you off the sofa, the sort that has you glancing at the window once or twice.
Sissy Spacek's presence gives it a quiet, weathered kind of unease, the feeling that this town has seen things it will not quite explain. André Holland and Melanie Lynskey carry the newer arrivals' unease just as well. Between them, this cast makes Castle Rock feel lived in long before anything frightening happens.
Save it for a night when you have nowhere to be after, and a proper cup of tea, because you will let it go cold.
