Preacher

Preacher follows a small-town Texas preacher, played by Dominic Cooper, who ends up carrying something far stranger than a calling. It is adapted from the cult Vertigo comic by Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon, and it wears that comic-book DNA proudly: violent, irreverent, and never quite sure whether it wants to unsettle you or make you laugh.

The fear here is not the jump-scare kind. It sits in the paranormal and the demonic, the sense that something has got its hooks into a good man and won't let go, dressed up in pitch-black comedy and proper bursts of action. Ruth Negga and Joe Gilgun round out a cast that treats the strangeness as ordinary, which somehow makes it worse.

This is one for a night when you want horror with a wicked sense of humour rather than pure dread, something to watch with a drink in hand and no illusions that anyone on screen is entirely trustworthy.

It ran four seasons on AMC and saw its odd little apocalypse through to the end, which is more than most shows this strange manage.
