This is one for a night when you can't settle on what kind of scared you want to be, because it hands you eight different answers instead of one. Guillermo del Toro gathered a set of filmmakers and let each of them loose on their own hour, so nothing here holds the same shape for long.

Two of the eight scripts are his, written with a co-writer, while the rest come from other writers and directors, each bringing their own eye. The whole thing sits somewhere between old-fashioned Gothic dread and the messier, more theatrical end of horror, so a quiet, creeping episode can sit right next to something far more grotesque.

Best watched in short bursts rather than all at once. It suits an evening when the curtains are drawn and you fancy dipping into something new every twenty minutes, without signing up for a whole film's worth of a single idea.
