A man escapes the institution that has held him for fifteen years and comes back to a quiet Illinois town on the one night everyone's out and distracted. A doctor who never quite gave up on him goes looking, and a babysitter with rather more sense than her friends becomes the one he settles on.

The fear here isn't really about gore, it's patience. Empty streets, a figure standing still where it has no business standing, that particular dread of someone simply watching from across a garden. It gets under your ribs more than it makes you jump, though it manages that too, more than once.

Watch it with the lights down low, curtains shut, ideally on the actual night it's named for. It wants a proper armchair, a blanket you can hide behind, and absolutely nobody talking over that score, because the score is doing half the work all on its own.
