Woodsboro is a small town nursing a fresh wound. A year on from her mother's murder, Sidney Prescott and her friends become the target of a costumed killer who won't leave them alone.
What makes it stand out is how knowing it is. These teenagers have grown up on the same scary films you have, and they talk about the rules out loud, even as they break them or get caught out by them. That self awareness never blunts the tension though, and there's a proper sense of dread running underneath all the wit.
Working out who is behind it becomes half the fun, and the film keeps you guessing right through Sidney's own circle of friends and family.
It suits anyone who likes their scares with a sense of humour still attached. Best watched with the lights half on and someone else in the room, because you will want to gasp at someone.
