This is Tim Burton's gothic musical take on the old London legend of the barber who turns killer. He comes back to Fleet Street with a grudge against the man who wronged him years before, and Mrs Lovett is only too happy to help him make the most of it.

The scares here come dressed in song, and there is a bleak, blackly funny streak running under the whole thing. It leans properly gruesome once the pair get going, so it is splatter with a score, more unsettling than jumpy, and not one for anyone squeamish about a barber's chair.

This is one for a night when you want your horror with a bit of theatre to it. Pour something strong, settle into the darkest corner of the sofa, and let the whole grubby, gorgeous mess of it play out.
