This one starts small: a few gulls acting strangely, a peck here and there. Then Bodega Bay tips over into something properly wrong, as the birds turn on the town in growing numbers and nobody has the first idea why.
The fear here isn't blood and jump scares, it's the quiet horror of nature simply refusing to behave. No motive, no explanation offered, just ordinary skies turning into something you'd rather not look up at. Hitchcock lets the dread build slowly, so by the time it properly arrives you're already flinching at every flap of wings.
It's one for a night when you want tension rather than gore, the kind of film that has you eyeing your own windows afterwards. Tippi Hedren carries much of it in her first screen role, cool and composed while the whole world falls apart around her.
Nothing about it is ever explained, and that's the whole point. You're left with the same blank fear the characters have, and it doesn't let go once the credits start.
