A priest and a young nun still in her novitiate are sent out to a remote abbey in Romania, 1952, to uncover an unholy secret that the place has been guarding. It's gothic horror in its purest form, all stone corridors, guttering candles and a convent that has clearly stopped answering to prayers.

The fear here creeps rather than reasons with you, the kind that lives in doorways you didn't check twice and a bell that shouldn't be ringing on its own. It sits within the Conjuring world, so if you already know Valak, you know she doesn't knock before she arrives.

Save this one for a proper dark night, when you've already double checked the locks. It suits anyone who likes their scares with a bit of incense and a lot of dread rather than gore for its own sake.

At ninety six minutes, it's exactly long enough to have you leaving a lamp on afterwards.
