iZombie
A zombie medical examiner solves murders by taking on the memories and personalities of the dead.
Liv Moore was a doctor before becoming a zombie. Now she works as a medical examiner and helps solve murders by eating the victims’ brains. That gives her temporary access to their memories and personalities. It is a useful arrangement for an investigation, if you can get past the lunch. I find the idea of borrowing someone else’s memories unsettling enough without having to consider the washing-up.
The fear here sits in the body and the mind: what happens when a person’s thoughts arrive in your head, even briefly? The murder cases give it a crime-story shape, while the premise leaves room for the strange and the funny. I would put the scare level at two. The central idea is grisly, but this is one for someone who wants a supernatural mystery rather than a night spent checking every shadow in the room.
It suits an evening when you want something eerie with a question to follow. How much can a memory tell you about a death? And how do you carry on with your own life while other people’s personalities keep passing through it? The series comes from a comic, which makes this an interesting choice if you like seeing how a peculiar idea works on television. Put the kettle on. Perhaps eat before you press play.
