The Silence of the Lambs

Clarice Starling is barely out of training when the FBI sends her to interview a man already locked away for killings of his own, hoping he might help catch one who is still out there. That man is Hannibal Lecter, a psychiatrist as clever as he is dangerous, and every conversation with him costs her something before he gives anything back.

The killer she is actually chasing takes his victims' skin, and the film lets that sit in your head rather than showing it outright. The real fear here isn't a jump or a chase, it's how reasonable, even charming, real menace can sound across a table.

This is one for a properly quiet night, the sort where you want to be unsettled slowly rather than startled once and forget it by morning. It rewards attention, so leave the phone in another room and watch it with the lights low.
