Ed and Lorraine Warren get pulled back into the sort of work that never quite lets go of people who do it. This time it's not their own home, it's a council house in England in 1977, where a family is living with something that's decided their evenings aren't quiet enough. James Wan directs, and he's got a real feel for a hallway you don't want to walk down.

The fear here is the slow, patient kind. Doors that don't stay shut. Furniture that moves when nobody's touching it. A presence in the house that seems to know exactly when everyone's just got comfortable. It builds rather than jumps, though there's plenty of jumping too.

This one's for a night when you want the sofa cushions arranged like a fortress and the lights already on before it starts. Two and a bit hours is a proper commitment, so put the kettle on first.

Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga are steady as ever as the Warrens, the sort of people you'd want on speed dial if your house started acting up.
