Sam and Dean Winchester are brothers who spend their lives on the road, driving from one town to the next to deal with whatever has started killing people there. It is never straightforward, and the monster under the bed is rarely the worst thing they meet.

What holds it together, series after series, is the two of them. Fifteen years is a long time to watch two brothers rely on nobody but each other, especially once angels and demons get involved and the stakes stop being local.

It is a slow-burn kind of frightening rather than a jump-scare one, built for watching in instalments rather than one sitting in the dark. Good company for the sort of evening when you want something running in the background, a voice in the room, rather than a single scare to brace for.

Eric Kripke's creation ran to 327 episodes without losing its nerve, which is no small thing for a show about family, faith and the things that go bump in an American backroad.
